//// Abstract: The paper takes up J. McDowell’s claim in Mind and World that the lack of a serious notion of second nature is an obstacle to an effective response by Kant to the Cartesian view of the self. An reconstruction of the Cartesian model of the mind is offered, as well as an analysis of key passages in the Critique of Pure Reason and P.F. Strawson´s reception of them, to the effect that there is a sense in which Kant may successfully do away with Cartesian temptations without recourse to the abovementioned notion.
